The Mahananda is one of the major rivers of north Bihar which originates 6 kms north of Kurseong in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal in the Himalayan range, close to Chimle, at a height of 2,062 metres. It is here that this river starts its 376 km long journey to the Ganga. The total catchment of the river is stated to be 24,753 sq kms of which 5,293 sq kms is located in Nepal, 6,677 sq kms in West Bengal and only 7.957 sq kms in Bihar. The rest of the catchment is located in Bangladesh where the river ultimately falls in the Ganga (Padma) near Godagarighat.
